Volunteering for the Aquarium Run

You may not be a runner but here is a great Volunteer opportunity for your family, club, Sunday school class, or any other group.

Aquarium Run

Saturday, May 16, 2009 the Oklahoma Aquarium is celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Aquarium Run. The run is one of the fastest growing family events in the area and has had participants from across the country as well as around the state.

We are asking your help in making this event one that the community is proud to support. We require approximately 130 volunteers to assist with everything from manning water stations, helping with traffic control to food preparation for the runners. Some shifts start at 5:00am (for all you early birds!) others start at 7:45 and 11:00am for cleanup. Proceeds of the event will go toward Oklahoma Aquarium Educational Programming and Exhibits.

Please contact Karen Dills at 528-1515 or kdills@okaquarium.org if you would like to volunteer for this fun family oriented event! If you are able to help please let Karen know T-shirt sizes. Volunteers get a free shirt and admission to the Aquarium on run day.

We will hold a Volunteer orientation for the run on Thursday, May 14th at 5:30pm at the Oklahoma Aquarium in the Education Classrooms.

Aqua-Teens

In June 2005, the Oklahoma Aquarium launched our Aqua-Teen Program, for teens between the ages of 13-17. The maximum number of the Aqua-Teens Team is 15 volunteers, and because this program has proven so successful, the program is currently full.

Aqua-Teens have been trained in various areas that not only better their assistance to Aquarium fans, but also give invaluable skills to carry through life and into adulthood. There have been many projects and training, including Cephalopod Day at the Aquarium. Aqua-Teens learned about Cephalopods (squids, octopus, nautiluses and cuttlefish) and were responsible for setting up and staffing various children’s activities and interacting with guests. They have been on behind-the-scenes tours and have observed the Biology staff during their daily routines. They have been trained on the touch tanks, participated in a fish ID class and fishing clinics, and learned basic anatomy and adaptations of fish.

Aqua-Teens have the opportunity to participate in most Aquarium events, with many various exciting ways to help out and learn.

The Oklahoma Aquarium has the most amazing volunteers, giving so much of their time and energy, and our Aqua-Teens are a very special addition to this powerful team!
